[ GLOSSARY DEFINITION ] Display

backlight

The light source behind an LCD panel that illuminates the pixels; OLED displays have no backlight.

Also known as: LCD backlight

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

A backlight provides the illumination that an LCD panel modulates to form an image, since LCD pixels filter light rather than emit it. It is typically made of LEDs, either along the edge or arranged across the back of the panel.

Backlight design drives local dimming and backlight bleed. Emissive panels such as OLED need none.
