[ GLOSSARY DEFINITION ] Display

blooming

A halo of light that spills from a bright area into neighbouring dark zones on a locally dimmed LCD.

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

Blooming occurs when a bright object on a dimmed LCD causes the backlight zones around it to light up, producing a soft halo against an otherwise black background. It is the main drawback of local dimming.

More, smaller dimming zones reduce blooming. Emissive displays such as OLED do not suffer from it.
