dynamic contrast

A marketing contrast figure adjusted on the fly by changing overall screen brightness frame by frame.

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

Dynamic contrast is a headline ratio produced by varying the entire backlight's brightness depending on the scene, rather than a panel's true simultaneous range. The resulting numbers (e.g. "1,000,000:1") are usually far larger than real static contrast.

It offers little benefit for detailed content and is best treated as a spec-sheet figure, not a quality measure.
