FALD

Full Array Local Dimming — an LCD backlight split into many independently controlled LED zones behind the panel, rather than a single edge-lit strip.

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) divides an LCD's backlight into a grid of LED zones that can each be dimmed independently. Because the light source sits directly behind the panel instead of along one edge, FALD panels can darken large regions for deeper blacks and higher contrast than edge-lit designs.

The trade-off is cost, thickness, and blooming — bright objects can spill light into neighbouring dark zones. More zones (mini-LED) reduce the effect. See local dimming and dimming zones.
